Veiled

There was something about her,
The way she looked and stared
Amazed by the men gathered there.
The smoke of tobacco enveloped the room
Each minute passed in fumes.
Yet, there she stood
Unmoved.
Like a doll, bright in her sari
She looked like the sun
As they spun round her.
She never moved.
She hid behind a veil,
Far from the eyes of men
She hid behind a veil
For that was then;
She hid behind a veil
Forced innocence in shame
She hid behind a veil
Because they gave her no name.
